St. Augustine is unfolding. Various famous sights and restaurants are opening throughout 2021. Review the opening list on our website for up-to-date news. The St. Augustine Amphitheatre is the definitive music and entertainment venue in the ancient city. The venue is flexible and popular by hosting large-scale events across multiple stages to intimate shows with small crowds.

Suppose an act has visited the ancient city. In that case, there’s a good chance they spent some time performing at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, locally known as The AMP. We take a look at THE AMP’S history and who helps to make each and every event a huge success.

History of The Amphitheatre

The Amphitheatre sits on a very significant plot of land. Pressed up alongside and against the coquina quarries, the grounds contained rich resources for building some of the city’s most valuable buildings. The quarries were mined extensively and built such vital landmarks like the Castillo de San Marcos.

The Amphitheatre itself was built in 1965 and ushered in a new era of community. The venue was the core site for an epic play, “Cross and Sword,” retelling the founding of St. Augustine through the eyes of Pedro Menendez.

By the turn of the 1980s, the venue’s potential was tapped even further. More plays were put on at the venue, and even musical guests started being regularly booked.

In 1999, a massive renovation project sought to overhaul the venue, expanding its seating capacity to around 4,100 and building up to cater to larger-sized events.

Community Engagement

The St. Augustine Amphitheatre is a pivotal component of community engagement. It’s more than a simple venue- it’s a location for many events, musical and otherwise, from local markets to artist meetups, from boutique-type events to school camps.

Friends of Saint Augustine Amphitheatre

Many of these events are managed and led by the 501(c) 3 tax-exempt Friends of Saint Augustine Amphitheatre. Created in 2009, this group is actually a separate entity of the Amphitheatre. The team develops and promotes events often hosted by the venue. There is an element of community engagement with everything they do through school groups, environmental awareness, and local projects. Ultimately, it’s more than just higher attendance at rock concerts.

The Farmers Market

The farmers market is an extremely popular weekly attraction, rallying locals around local brands for all sorts of cool boutique art, jewelry, snacks, and plants.

The St. Augustine Farmers Market is every Saturday at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. It runs from around 8:30 a.m. to 12:130 p.m. Most Saturdays feature live music at the pavilion, about three food trucks, local farmers like Frogsong Organics, and about 25-35 other vendors.

Market and parking entrance is free. At this time, no pets are allowed. But we do encourage you to bring reusable bags or purchase a reusable tote bag on site.
